The Hidden Costs Web Agencies Don't Mention Before You Sign
The quote looks cheap until the extras arrive. Here are the seven costs that surprise clients after a website contract is signed, and the questions to ask up front so none of them surprise you.
A low quote is easy to win and easy to regret. Many website projects go over budget not because the work was hard but because things that should have been in the price were never written down. Ask about each of the following before you sign anything.
1. Hosting, domain and renewals
The build price often excludes the ongoing costs. Find out who owns the domain, where the site is hosted, what it costs per year and who pays when it renews. The domain should be registered in your name.
2. Changes after launch
Some agencies charge for every small edit once the site is live, or bill a large hourly rate. Ask what is included in a support period and what a typical change costs.
3. Content and images
Text, photography and translation are frequently assumed to be your job. If the site needs Thai and English versions, or professional photos, confirm who produces them and whether that's priced.
4. Plugins and licences
Themes, page builders and plugins can carry annual licence fees. Ask which paid tools the site depends on and what happens if you stop paying.
5. Ownership and lock-in
Who owns the code and the design when the project ends? Some agencies keep the site on their own platform, which makes leaving expensive. You should receive full access and the source files.
6. SEO and analytics
A site that looks good but has no analytics, no proper page titles and no sitemap is half finished. Confirm that basic search setup and tracking are part of the delivery, not an upsell.
7. Security and maintenance
Websites need updates, backups and monitoring. If no one is responsible for them, an ageing site becomes a security risk. Ask who handles updates and what it costs.
The question that saves the most money
Ask for a written scope that lists what is included, what is not, and what every extra costs. A serious agency will happily provide one. That is how we work at OutDept, and we're glad to walk through a fixed-scope quote for your project.
